This blog is for those of us who don’t really want to rig the house up with a load of smart (automated) lighting, not only is it expensive but it can be tricky to install if you are doing it yourself. This is about a great alternative that will help save money, increase the life of your bulbs and bring a little ambiance into your life with the simple dim of a switch!

So, what is a dimmer switch?

It’s essentially a light switch, which handles off and on and all light levels in between.

How do they work?

Resistors rapidly shut the light circuit off and on to reduce the total amount of energy flowing through. The light bulb circuit is switched off multiple times every second. The switching cycle is built around the fluctuation of household alternating current which has varying voltage polarity in an undulating sine wave, it fluctuates from a positive voltage to a negative voltage.

What are the benefits?

  • Energy Savings – Dimmer switches can make a big difference on your energy consumption, they give you have greater control over how much electricity you use. With traditional light switches, the only options are on and off, meaning you’re either using no electricity or 100%! With a dimmer, you have a choice of all light levels in between on and off. Being able to decrease the amount of light being used results in lower energy bills. Install dimmers in the rooms you spend the most time in, in particular the lounge and bedroom. You will soon notice a difference in your energy bills. If you have a smart meter, you can see the difference right in front of your eyes! Couple dimmer switches with energy efficient bulbs and you are also helping reduce your carbon footprint and helping the environment.
  • Light bulb longevity - dimmers will make your light bulbs last a lot longer as you won’t have them at full energy exertion all the time, the softer the light, the longer your light bulbs will last. You can get up to 3 or 4 years extra usage out of your light bulbs simply by using a dimmer switch. Even dimming the lights by 25% can result in big savings and potentially increase the life of your bulbs 4x over!
  • Ambiance – Dimmer switches give instant ambience to a room. Lowering the lights can give a warm, cosy feel to the room. Dim them low while watching a movie or turn them up if you want to read. Dimmer switches enable as much versatility as strategically placed lamps!

Where can you get dimmer switches from?

You can buy them at many different outlets but we would recommend buying from a reputable retailer such as @Homebase or @ScrewFix. You can be safe in the knowledge that they have passed the necessary testing.
